It's time to switch to electric

Electric vehicles can save your business money. Electric cars and vans are cheaper to run than petrol or diesel vehicles. They benefit from tax breaks, low fuel costs and are offered with sizable Government grants. This page will give you some more information about switching your business to electric.

Cost saving

Service, maintenance and repair (SMR) costs

Service, maintenance and repair (SMR) costs for plug-in vehicles can be significantly lower than those for internal combustion engine models. This is in part due to the ‘simpler’ technology used in electric vehicles, and a study by Go Ultra Low has found that UK motorists could save an average £306 a year in garage bills by switching to a new electric car.

Fuel costs

Fuel is typically the second biggest vehicle-related cost and potentially accounts for 25%-30% of fleet expenditure. The good news is that fuelling an electric car can cost up to 90% less than fuelling an electric vehicle. For example, you can fuel an electric car from just 2p per mile – much cheaper than the 10-12p per mile it costs to fuel a petrol or diesel car.

Tax savings

The motoring tax system is designed to encourage take-up of low emission and electric vehicles. Switching to an electric can help your business save on Benefit in Kind (BIK) rates, Class 1A National Insurance, Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), capital allowances and salary sacrifice regimes. More information about these savings is available on the Go Ultra Low website.

Grants for businesses

  • If you’re a business owner, or work for a charity or public sector organisation, you could be eligible for the OLEV Workplace Charging Scheme. This government scheme can provide up to £500 of funding towards the cost of every socket of each charging point installed.
  • There is a local authority business grant for employers to install charging points for their employees and fleet vehicles to use. These need to be on private land, not the adopted highway. If you are interested in this, please email the Business Engagement team at
  • The government offers up to £4,500 off the price of a new electric car, and up to £8,000 off the price of a new electric van. More information about these grants, which are applied at point of sale, can be found on the government’s website.

If you’re interested in grants for your home, please see our making the change page.
